The Big Picture
The Reykjavík International Literary Festival will be held for the 13th time on April 24-27 2019. It holds a status as one of the most important literary festival in Northern Europe. the festival is famous for its unique and intimate atmosphere and since its beginning, more than 300 international authors have taken part, inspired and been inspired.
Both Icelandic and international authors take part and give insights into their lives and work in interviews, readings and discussion. Events are in English and the program is non-parallel.
The Festival was held for the first time in 1985 and among our guests are William Styron, Seamus Heaney, Günter Grass, Haruki Murakami, José Saramago, Kurt Vonnegut, Herta Müller, Svetlana Alexievich, Margaret Atwood and Ngugi wa Thiong’o.
The festival hosts a publishers’ fellowship for international publishers and agents in collaboration with the Icelandic Literature Center and the Icelandic Publishers’ Association. The aim is to introduce Icelandic literature and authors to world.
During the festival, an honorary award for translations of Icelandic literature to a foreign language will be presented. The award is given for an excellent translation of works of Icelandic literature into another language, resulting in the increased renown of Icelandic literature abroad. As a result of relentless work in various fields, Icelandic literature has truly made its presence known in the foreign market in the last two decades.
