Scholarships in Icelandic Studies for Foreign Students

The Icelandic Ministry of Education, Science and Culture awards annually a number of scholarships for studies in Icelandic for Foreign Students at the University of Iceland.

In the 2012-2013 academic year, from 1 September 2013 to 30 April 2014, approximately 18 scholarships will be available. Please notice that the handling of the Icelandic Government Program has been moved to the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies.

These scholarships are intended for students of language and literature. Students who have completed at least two academic years of university study and with some prior knowledge of Icelandic or other Nordic language will be given priority. Preference will, as a rule, be given to a candidate under 35 years of age.

Students of listed country (see following information leaflet) and fulfill the aforementioned requirements can apply directly to the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies, Sigurður Nordal Office, Box 1220, 121 Reykjavík, Iceland.

The applications must reach the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies by March 1, 2013. A special application form is to be used. This form can be downloaded from:

A special committee in Iceland will decide on the outcome of the applications and its evaluation will be announced to the candidates by April 2013.
