In his testimony, President Grimsson described how Iceland has managed to transform its energy system ffrom being based on imported coal and oil, to one in which 100% of its energy production derives from renewable energy resources. Dr. Grimsson informed the Committee that 72% of Iceland´s total energy consumption comes from indigenous renewable sources, 54% from geothermal and 18% from hydropower, while only the fishing and transport fleet requires imported fossil fuel. He focused particularly on Iceland´s experience in harnessing geothermal energy, and answered questions from the Committee members.
