Icelandic fashion designer Steinunn Sigurd in Ningxia and BIFT
An established Icelandic fashion designer, Mrs. Steinunn Sigurd, along with the Culture and Trade Representative of the Embassy, Mr Haflidi Saevarsson, visited Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in North-West China in mid May to explore opportunities for Icelandic designers in the area. Her visit is a part of a collaboration project between the Embassy and Promote Iceland aimed at examining the feasability of cooperation between cashmere and textile producers in Ningxia on one hand and Icelandic designers and wool workshops on the other hand. Results are to be presented at an open meeting in Iceland in due course.
The Ningxia project was lauched in connection with UPBEAT:2010, a series of five exhibitions held in the Beijing art district called 751.D-Park and at the Embassy in November of last year, where Steinunn assisted the Embassy in preparing the exhibitions. Representatives from the local authorities and textile industry in Ningxia attended the opening of the exhibitions and a discussion on future cooperation was initiated.
During her visit, Steinunn also had a meeting with representatives of Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT), a design school in Beijing and visited a museum showcasing their extensive collection of historic Chinese garments.
The Embassy assisted in organising the Ningxia and BIFT meetings and will follow up on the project.
