Icelandic Passports

Regular passports

Regular passports for Icelandic nationals are issued by the The National Registry. The main application center in the Reykjavik area is the office of the Kopavogur District Commissioner (see map). Outside Reykjavik applications are processed by local District Commissioners. Applications for passports can be placed at any of the application centers, independent of legal residence. Passport applications must be placed in person.

Outside Iceland, applicants can apply for regular passports at the Icelandic embassies in Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Berlin, London and Washington DC.

Emergency Passports

All Icelandic embassies and permanent missions to international organisations may issue emergency passports to Icelandic citizens abroad. Emergency passports are never valid for more than one year and are always valid for return travel to Iceland and in most cases for travel to countries where Icelandic citizens are exempt from visas.

All Icelandic Consulates outside the Nordic countries are authorized to issue emergency passports.

Extending the validity of passports

Icelandic diplomatic missions and consulates may extend the validity of regular passports which have expired in the preceding 12 months, or are due to expire shortly, if it is not possible to issue a new passport in time. Such extension can never be of longer duration than one year.

Diplomatic passports and official passports

Diplomatic passports and official passports are issued in accordance with rules issued by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
