Sjón nominated for Irish literary award
Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón was recently nominated for the International IMPAC DUBLIN Literary Award for his book From the Mouth of the Whale. The nomination process of this award is unique as the nominations were determined by libraries from 120 cities in 44 countries, where each chose three novels of literary excellence published over a specific period of time.
Shortlisted titles will be announced on 9 April and the winner on 6 June 2013.
Sjón's book was also shortlisted for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2012, where the judges made the following comment:
"This memorable, magical book tells the story of an Icelandic sage banished to exile on Gullbjörn's Island in 1635. [...] Sjón's remarkable tale imagines a delirious 17th century Iceland swithering between mysticism and a new scientific rationalism and it is rendered brilliantly into English in Victoria Cribb's exuberant translation".
