The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior of Iceland, Ms. Ragnhildur Hjaltadóttir, attended the 28th Assembly of the International Maritime Organisation where, on behalf of Iceland, she signed the 2012 Cape Town Agreement on the Implementation of the Provisions of the 1993 Protocol relating to the Torremolinos International Convention for the Safety of Fishing Vessels, 1977.
Iceland ratified the Torremolinos Convention in 1986 and the 1993 Protocol in 1998, but its implementation has resulted in fewer deaths among Icelandic sailors and fishermen.
