Animagica - 17 December at Shoreditch Church

ANIMAGICA - BRANCHAGE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

THIS DECEMBER ICELANDIC QUARTET
AMIINA WILL PERFORM A LIVE
ACCOMPANIMENT TO ANIMATIONS
BY PIONEERING GERMAN FILMMAKER
LOTTE REINIGER IN SHOREDITCH
CHURCH, ONE OF EAST LONDON’S
MOST HISTORIC VENUES.

This exclusive performance is curated by
Branchage, Jersey’s acclaimed new film festival.
Branchage originally commissioned the live
soundtracks to Reiniger’s animations of Sleeping
Beauty and Cinderella to be performed at this
year’s Festival in Jersey’s Opera House.

Such was the overwhelmingly positive response
to the event that Branchage decided to organise a
London performance, timed to be a counterpoint
to the Christmas pantomime tradition. Rather
than the slapstick dames of these modern takes
on fairy tales, Amiina explores the mystery and
darkness at the heart of the original stories,
themes that Reiniger brought to life in her
animations nearly a century ago.

“The show blends the magic of Reiniger’s earliest
work with the ethereal sounds of Iceland’s Amiiaa,
an all female group whose instruments and the
beautiful music they create are as original as the
images they accompany. One of the highlights of the
2009 Branchage Film Festival, the show captivated
audiences. A thrilling mix of old and new, Animagica
offers an opportunity to witness a wonderful group
bring images from early cinema back to life.”
- Ian Hayden Smith, International Film Guide, of the
original Jersey concert.

Best known for their collaborations with the
band Sigur Ros, Amiina use traditional and non
traditional instruments to create captivating
sound-scapes.

“We were really hooked on things like the big
movements and long scenes and sequences that were
basically just atmosphere. Some of the films there are
long stretches of movement and repetitive things that
are simply beautiful, like a flock of birds just flying
about, really inspiring to work with musically.”

- Amiina’s Maria Sigfúsdóttir told music website The
Quietus(full feature at: http://bit.ly/MJnOf )
The imposing St Leonards Church, (also known
as Shoreditch Church), dates from the 17th
century and will provide a suitably atmospheric
venue for the event. Audiences will be treated to
the wintry delights of mulled wine by candlelight.

The event will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday
December 17, and tickets cost £12, available in
advance from wegottickets.com

Branchage is Jersey’s new International Film Festival, now
in its second year (this year’s Festival was held on the island
from 1-4 October 2009). The festival screened a diverse
collection of features, documentaries and live soundtracks
in 16 venues across the island, including a castle, war
tunnels and a barn.
“Branchage boasts the beaches of Cannes without the bun
fights, the seafood of Venice without the crowds, the indie chic
of Sundance without the 18-hour flight, the ease of Edinburgh
without the drizzle.” – The Guardian
