1,200 Miles - An Evening of New Icelandic Music

The Luminaire presents 1,200 Miles, an evening of new Icelandic music featuring Benni Hemm Hemm, Flís, Paul Lydon and DJ Apfelblut (of Múm). Horn-drenched pop, delicate piano-led musings and melodic, mesmerizing jazz.

Benni Hemm Hemm and the gang are two Icelandic bands, one Reykjavík-based solo artist from Boston and an Icelandic DJ with a German name. They’re on the way to Tokyo but we’ve had their flight diverted to London for the evening.

Sunday 26 November 2006, 7.30pm

BENNI HEMM HEMM is a big band with glockenspiel and guitars flying through the air [not literally, we hope] and a very big brass section. They released their self-titled debut album in Iceland a year ago and collected the award for Best Album at the Icelandic Music Awards, as well as the Best Newcomer award. Said album was released in Japan early this year and will arrive in Europe and the US this autumn.

The notorious jazz trio FLÍS hold the world record for the number of albums released in the past two years [probably]. They’ve recorded their own versions of songs that the legendary Haukur Morthens made famous in Iceland on the album ‘Vottur’, then they recorded an album with an 80 year old diva on the album ‘Í Sólgulu húsi’. They have their own studio, their own label on which they release live recordings in very limited quantities, and of course they play ten shows a week.

PAUL LYDON has been called the best living poet writing in Icelandic. His music is subtle, quiet and very, very beautiful. He has released numerous albums, some under the name Blekink, and his latest one ‘Vitlaust hús’ has many fans and will soon be released in Japan.

DJ APFELBLUT is a poet with many books published in Iceland. His real name is Örvar and he’s a member of the band MÚM.
