Advent reading in Moscow

Advent reading in Moscow Moscow's second annual reading of the book “Advent”, by Gunnar Gunnarsson, took place on Friday the 12th of December. The event was organized by ODRI in cooperation with the embassy, the books Russian publisher, Skriduklaustur and the Moscow Library of Foreign Languages. The event was attended by around 80 guests and Ambassador Jónsson gave an address where he talked about the book, its author and Icelandic Christmas culture.

Ambassador to Kazhakstan Ambassador Jónsson handed in his credentials as Iceland’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, with residence in Moscow, on Oktober 7th. He was accompanied by a business delegation comprising of representatives from the transport- and travel industry.

Nordic Days in St. Petersburg

Nordic Days in St. Petersburg Today Ambassador Jónsson along with representatives of the Nordic countries and Nordic Council of Ministers opened the Nordic Weeks in St. Petersburg. An extensive program of Nordic events will take place from September 27th to October 24th. Iceland’s contribution will be an exhibition of the renowned artist Tolli, concert of the Reykjavik male choir and a presentation by architect Páll Hjaltason about city planning at the St. Petersburg Innovation Forum.

Meeting with Russian Fisheries Authority Yesterday Ambassador Jónsson met with Mr. Ilya Shestakov, the new Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, to discuss matters of common interest to Russia and Iceland in the area of fisheries.

Arctic convoy memorial

Arctic convoy memorial Yesterday Ambassador Jónsson attended the unveiling in St. Petersburg of a memorial to the WWII Arctic convoys. The ships that departed the UK, USA and Iceland for northern Russian ports played a role in the defense of Russia during the war and are part of Iceland’s and Russia’s shared history. Among those attending the ceremony were British and Russian veterans and representatives from the UK, Denmark and Norway.

History of diplomatic relations

History of diplomatic relations Yesterday Embassy staff welcomed members of the Russian Foreign Ministry to the residence of the Icelandic Ambassador. The purpose was to celebrate the publication in Icelandic and Russian of the history of Russian / Soviet and Icelandic official relations from 1943-2008. The work was compiled by the dedicated staff of the Russian and Icelandic Foreign Ministries.

Icelandic National Day

Yesterday more than 200 people celebrated Iceland’s 70th Independence Day at the residence of the Icelandic Ambassador in Moscow. Among them Icelanders living in Moscow, members of the Icelandic – Russian friendship association, Russians doing business with or that have cooperation with Icelandic companies and entities, Russian officials, members of the diplomatic corps, embassy staff and their families. Among the treats on offer were Icelandic lamb, hot dogs with all the trimmings and flags for the children.

Tourism event Embassy of Iceland Moscow and Icelandair hosted a reception at the residence of the Icelandic Ambassador for around 40 Russian travel agents to promote Iceland as a destination for tourists from Russia.

Sirha food expo Today Icelandic lamb meat was being promoted at the Sirha food expo in Moscow by La Mareé. The company is selling the product to restaurants in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Moscow International Travel and Tourism EXPO

Moscow International Travel and Tourism EXPO From Wednesday the 19th of until Saturday the 22nd of March Promote Iceland, in cooperation with Embassy of Iceland Moscow, manned a stand at the Moscow International Travel and Tourism Exhibition (MITT). The exhibition is the biggest tourism show in Russia with tens of thousands of visitors. Tourism from Russia to Iceland has increased by 27,5% in the first two months of the year 2014 compared with 2013.

Luxury supermarket promotion

Luxury supermarket promotion On Tuesday the 18th of March Ambassador Jónsson invited representatives of Russian luxury supermarkets and meat distributers to a tasting and promotion of Icelandic food products at his residence. Chef Friðrik Sigurðsson, of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, prepared some samples of Icelandic cuisine. Icelandic lamb meat, various types of fish, water, dairy products, canned goods and dried fish were among the many products introduced to the guests.

Icelandair promotion in Moscow

Icelandair promotion in Moscow On Monday the 17th of March Embassy of Iceland Moscow and Icelandair invited around 90 members of the Russian Tourism industry and Icelandic tourism companies to visit the Embassy. The guest were introduced to Iceland as a destination for Russian tourists, told about Icelandair´s direct flights from St. Petersburg to Iceland and given a taste of Icelandic culinary expertise by Chef Friðrik Sigurðsson.

New MAREL branch office in Russia On 26 Feruary Ambassador Jónsson took part in opening a branch office for the Icelandic company MAREL FOOD SYSTEMS IN Leninsk Kuznetsky in Keromovo region.

Iceland at PROD EXPO

Iceland at PROD EXPO The PROD EXPO international food exhibition takes place this week in Moscow. It includes an Icelandic stand run by the company G.Ingason which exports various fish products to Russia. Strong emphasis has in recent years been put on cod liver in cans and has met with success. Now millions of cans of this wholesome Icelandic product reach the Russian market.

Icelandic Russian bilateral trade talks were held in Reykjavik this week. Up for discussion were matters related to tourism, meat and fish exports, telecommunication, investment opportunities and energy projects.
