Iceland and USA sign security agreement

The new agreement envisages several joint Icelandic-US efforts to counter new threats in the international system, which will replace the permanent US military presence in Iceland, that came to an end early October. During the visit to Washington D.C., PM Haarde and Icelandic Minister of Justice, Mr. Bjorn Bjarnason, also met with US Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, and Foreign Minister Sverrisdottir met with Susan Schwab, US Trade Represenative, and Paul Wolfowitz, President of the World Bank.
