Ceremony of Presentation of Credentials in Rome
Earlier this week Ambassador Kristjan Andri Stefansson presented his credentials to the President of the Italian Republic, H.E. Mr. Sergio Mattarella, at a ceremony taking place at the Quirinale palace in Rome. At their meeting the Ambassador presented to the President ways to further enhance the excellent relations existing between the two countries by bilateral cooperation in the field of geothermal exploitation on one hand and on the other monitoring of volcanic activity, whereas Iceland and Italy are the only two countries in Europe with active volcanoes. Furthermore, the Ambassador commended Italy's leadership in matters of refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean where also Iceland has participated in Frontex operations and expressed his sympathies for the loss of lives and suffering of so many following the earthquakes in Amatrice and Visso.
