Item 2 : General Debate

Twenty-seventh session of the Human Rights Council
Geneva, 8 September 2014

Mr President,

Iceland welcomes the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and congratulates Mr. Zeid al-Hussein on his appointment. We wish him courage and success in the fulfillment of his mandate.

Now as ever, the world needs the strong and independent voice of the High Commissioner to denounce atrocities and abuses wherever they occur, and to mobilize the international community to action.

Iceland would like to draw the High Commissioner´s attention to three issues in particular. Firstly, gender equality and women's rights must be further promoted by integrating a gender perspective into all efforts in the field of human rights. Secondly, Iceland encourages High Commissioner Zeid al-Hussein to pay particular attention to the human rights of LGBT people, who continue to face intolerable discrimination around the world. Last, but not least, we encourage the High Commissioner to actively promote and defend the rights of children, who remain one of the most vulnerable groups to abuses and exploitation.

Finally, Mister President, please rest assured that Iceland will continue to support the High Commissioner and the important work of his Office in the years to come.
