Human Rights Council, 22nd session - Syria
Monday 11 March 2013, Iceland took part in two joint statements on the human rights situation in Syria delivered during the 22nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. The statements were both delivered during an Interactive Dialouge with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic.
The first statement was delivered by Lybia on behalf of a cross-regional group and addressed the gravity and scale of the violations, the large proportion of civilian casualties and the total impunity for the crimes being committed. The focus of the intervention was accountability and the call to bring to justice perpetrators of such crimes to the ICC was reiterated. To read the full statement click here.
The latter statement was a Nordic statement delivered by Sweden on behalf og Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway. The statement expressed grave concerns about the deteriorating human rights situtation in Syria where special attention is given to women and children. To read the full statement click here.
