Settlements, old and new. Icelandic landscape in urban contexts - Vortrag von Ástráður Eysteinsson
This presentation grows out of a study of how certain Icelandic places and particular landscapes figure in modern urban culture, as evidenced by a selection of literary texts. Concentrated urban life has a very short history in Iceland, which was a dominantly rural society well into the 20th century; in fact, it wasn't until World War II that Reykjavik, the island's only city, started developing into a substantial modern urban centre. In this urban context, literature and painting constitute important arenas of aesthetic figuration and cultural memory as concerns Icelandic landscape, both in terms of the value of nature, landscape and countryside, and of the significance of particular places that are seen as nodal points of such value.
