Update on volcano eruptions in Iceland

A volcanic eruption began in the Grimsvotn underneath the Vatnajökull glacier in South-East Iceland on Saturday 21 May. Unlike the volcanic eruption last year, the impact of this eruption is at much smaller scale. Aviation safety measures has been lifted two days after the eruption and some international flights have already resumed at the Keflavik airport today.

Information on the eruption can be found on the websites of the Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management and the Icelandic Met Office. For information on air traffic, see the websites of Isavia and the respective airlines.

Grimsvotn in Vatnajokull glacier is more than 200 km away from Reykjavik.
