Opening of Free Trade Negotiations between Iceland and China

The first round of negotiations for a FTA between Iceland and China took place in Beijing 11.-12. April 2007. The Chinese delegation was headed by Director General Yu Jianhua from the Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs, Ministry of Commerce of the PRC. The Icelandic delegation was headed by Ambassador Gunnar Snorri Gunnarsson.

Apart from MOFCOM the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture, the General Administration of Customs and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine were represented in the Chinese delegation of 25 members.

The Icelandic Delegation had representatives of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Fisheries

Delegations exchanged information and briefed each other on the background for their positions. Contact points were appointed for contacts between rounds.

The next round will take place in Reykjavík in June, the third in Beijing in September and a fourth in Reykjavík in December, aiming at entry into force in 2008 or 2009.
