Chinese school children receive Icelandic study awards

Top performing students at the Sino-Icelandic Hope School in Liangshan County in Sichuan Province were awarded study awards at a ceremony on March 2. The Icelandic Business Forum in China (IBF) donated the awards. The same organisation also co-financed the reconstruction of the school after the great Sichuan earthquakes in 2008.

binghuaA representative of the Icelandic Embassy in Beijing, Mr Ragnar Baldursson Minister Counsellor and the writer and film maker Andri magnason handed over the awards on behalf of the IBF. Representatives of the local government were also in presence.

The school children were also given gifts from Iceland. The President of Iceland sent a substantive book about Iceland and Icelandic handicraft that will be on display in the school. All the children were also given traditional Icelandic sweets, which drew smiles to their faces.

Andri Magnason, who is in China to participate in the 2011 Bookworm Literary Festival, read his book the Blue Planet, which has been published in Chinese translation. Then Andri also discussed Iceland and the importance to protect the environment. The Embassy gave the children the book when the school was formally opened at the beginning of 2010.
