1979 BA in Political Science from the University of Iceland.
1979-1980 MA in International Affairs from the University of Wisconsin - Madison
1980-1983 Further studies towards Ph.D at the University of Wisconsin - Madison

1983 - 1985 Researcher for the Icelandic Committee on Security and International Affairs
1985 - 1986 Planning Officer with the Association of the Municipalities in the Capital Area
1986 - 1988 Parliamentary Correspondent with the newspaper Timinn.
