The Icelandic Minister of Finance meets EU Commissioners
The Icelandic Minister of Finance, Árni M. Mathiesen, had on the 18 and 19 October 2006 meetings with three Commissioners of the European Commission, Joacquin Almunia, Commissioner for Economic and Monetary affairs, László Kovács, Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Union and Dalia Grybauskatié, Commissioner for Financial Programming and Budget. The purpose of the meetings was to discuss policies and developments in the EU.
Commissioner Almunia and the Minister discussed the economic structural reform in relation to the Lisbon Strategy as well as monetary developments. At the meeting with CommissionerKovács the main topic was development of tax systems and current EU policies and views regarding possible harmonisation of corporate tax base in the EU as well as EU priorities in the tax area. The Minister then had discussions with Commissioner Grybauskaité on budget policy and processes and the role of the EU budget and budgets of Member States to support EU priorities, among other things emphasis on competitiveness and economic growth.
