Camping in Reykjavik

Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, is the country's largest city and the world's most northerly capital. The capital area includes seven municipalities in addition to Reykjavík itself, with a total population of about 190,000, of which over 115,000 live in Reykjavík. Reykjavík means "Smoky Bay", so named by the first settler in the 9th Century because of steam rising from geothermal hot springs. This geothermal energy is utilized to provide economical, non-polluting heating to the city's buildings. Hence Reykjavík is one of the cleanest cities in the Western world. One of the country's best salmon rivers runs right through the city.

Reykjavík offers historical sites, natural beauty, museums and galleries, public parks, a wide range of leisure activities, shopping, hotels, restaurants and a remarkably lively artistic scene. There are many theaters and galleries and one can go to symphony concerts, the ballet or opera.

Old accounts say it was the ancient gods themselves who led Iceland's first settler, Ingólfur Arnarson, to make his home in Reykjavík. He named the place Reykjavík ("Smoky Bay") after the geothermal steam which today heats homes and outdoor swimming pools throughout the city, a pollution-free energy source that leaves the air outstandingly fresh, clean and clear. A salmon-fishing river runs through the city, and on its outskirts there are many beautiful places for fishing, horse riding, walking or playing golf.

Reykjavík is characterized by an interesting mix of cosmopolitan culture and traditional village roots. Galleries, concert halls, theatres, cinemas and the city itself provide the stage for the very best of Icelandic talent and creativity. The international flair combined with local tradition can also be experienced at the numerous restaurants in Reykjavík where one can find some of the freshest and healthiest foods available. Reykjavík is also renowned as one of Europe's hottest night spots, with many friendly pubs, dinner and dancing opportunities, as well as night clubs.
