The Icelandic Dance Company

The Icelandic Dance Company has just returned from a successful trip to a dance festival in Linz in Austria. The company received a enthusiastic response from audiences, and a positive commentary from critics and press. 

"Even if the Icelandic Dance Company comes from the North, it will leave no one feeling cold," stated a reviewer for the Tips Togal Regional. A reviewer for OÖNachrichten gave the performance a 5/6 star review. 

The company performed two works during the festival, Groβstadtsafari by Norwegian choreographer Jo Strömgren, and  Hållplats by Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman. 

About the Icelandic Dance Company: 

The Icelandic Dance Company was founded in 1973 as part of the National Theatre of Iceland. Today, it is an independent public institution, responsible for developing, creating and nurturing contemporary dance and choreography. The company's home base is the Reykjavík City Theatre, 

While it was originally founded as a classical ballet company, The Icelandic Dance Company has exclusively focused on contemporary dance under the artistic direction of Katrín Hall, who took over the company in 1996. Classically trained in Reykjavík and abroad, Katrín Hall started to performing with the Icelandic Dance Company in 1977, and became a full member in 1982. In 1988, she moved to Cologne, Germay, to become a solo dancer for the respected Tanzforum company, until she returned to Iceland to lead ID in 1996. 

"I wanted to make this a progressive, contemporary dance company that would take on more project internationally. I believed the company had the potential to do that," explains Katrín Hall. The company has worked with many of the world's leading choreographers, including Jirí Kylián, Jorma Uotinen, Rui
Horta, Jo Stromgren, Stijn Celis, Rami Be'er. 

The company consists of nine to fourteen dancers, all sharing a background in classical training but retaining a pronounced individuality. The group has emerged as an exciting and critically acclaimed contemporary dance company that performs in several, different countires each year.
